Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) is Malcolm’s opinionated and manipulative mother. She’s the disciplinarian and is seen generally as an embarrassment to her five boys.

Jane Kaczmarek already had a long and fruitful acting career with roles on stage and screen, but it was her role as Lois, the hard-nosed mother, on "Malcolm in the Middle" that placed her firmly in the spotlight. Kaczmarek attended the Yale School of Drama and eventually landed a recurring role as a nurse on "St. Elsewhere." In 1994, Kaczmarek appeared on the legal dramas "L.A. Law" and "Law & Order. Kaczmarek played the mother to Reese Witherspoon and Tobey Maguire on the big screen in "Pleasantville" in 1998. Kaczmarek closed out the decade with a recurring role on the late 90’s drama, "Felicity." In 2000, Kaczmarek began playing Lois on "Malcolm in the Middle," and she received numerous SAG, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for the role.
